Power-lifting - a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and dead-lift. As in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it involves lifting weights in three attempts. Power-lifting evolved from a sport known as "odd lifts", which followed the same three-attempt format but used a wider variety of events, akin to strongman competition. Eventually odd lifts became standardized to the current three.
Strongman-In the 19th century, the term strongman referred to an exhibitor of strength (before strength sports were codified into weightlifting, power-lifting etc., becoming actual athletic competitions) or circus performers of similar ilk who displayed feats of strength.
Here at Westside Power Gym we take pride that we are the only strongman gym in Rio Rancho NM but also have the tools and equipment for power-lifting. We frequently hold unsanctioned meets for power-lifting and strongman. We believe this helps prepare our members and guest for upcoming sanctioned meets and events.
Our team of 1 year currently holds 26 State records for NASA(Natural Athletic Strength Association). We are now a team of 10 and are always seeking more power-lifters. Please check our schedule page to check times for our happy hours. Those hours we lift as a team but that hour is also open for all members to attend.
